How to Use Social Media for Business

June 30th, 2010 by Clayton Walter

Three Basic Principles to Help Relieve those Social Media Stresses

With a swelling 2 billion tweets per month, a swarm of over 400 million active Facebook users, and 24 hours of fresh video being uploaded onto YouTube each minute of every day, it comes to little surprise that Social Media is the talk of the town — nor  a surprise that everyone and their mother wants to employ it.

I am no expert, not yet, but I think I can help. I recently assisted Ric Dragon, Executive CEO of DragonSearch, as he presented to B2C businesses the 15 Days to Social Media Fitness. His presentation was on point — full of enthusiasm and gripped with rich and useful content. He just has a certain presence about him — an entertainer’s quality — that really captivates an audience. As the presentation drew to a close, we packed up and grabbed some grub. It didn’t occur to me at the time — it wasn’t until the drive home — but throughout lunch, and for the better part of the day, these successful business owners were coming to me, the intern, for advice on how to better grip Social Media. And like any ambitious twenty-one year old predisposed to the digital world, the words came flowing. For a second it was overwhelming and I had to take a step back. (more…)

Six Pixels of Separation – Underlinings

June 29th, 2010 by Ric Dragon

Social Media BooksWhen you read a lot of books on a particular discipline, you find that you are often reading the same message over and over again. Because of this, when I pick up a book on online marketing or social media, I do so with a sharp pencil and a ruler, with the full intention of identifying each single nugget of wisdom. It also provides a clue to my co-workers as to what I find interesting, and helps us all to develop a common story.

Now, Six Pixels of Separation by Mitch Joel is a book I bought when it first came out back in September 2009.   And while I did take a stab at it then, I just wasn’t ready for another, what seemed to me at the time, evangelical tome on the benefits and means of social media. I put it down, and it joined the stack-o’books (real photo of said stack to the right) that would join me on my work-acation on Cape Cod. (more…)

Steps Towards Creating a Family Social Media Policy

June 22nd, 2010 by Claudia D'Arcy

Creating a Family Social Media Policy: part 2

internet-blundersNow that I have convinced you that you are a bad parent and the lives of your loved ones will be ruined in Creating a  Family Social Media Policy: part 1, we shall look at the beginning steps.  As with all things parenting related, creating a family social media policy will involved education, monitoring and rules.

One of the first hurdles to get over is convincing your children of WHY a Family social media policy is important. Granted, you might not parent by democracy, but  by educating your kids (and other family members if necessary) why it is important, there is a better chance of compliance through that understanding so let’s discuss first some reasons to avoid internet blunders.

The Importance of An Online Reputation

SCORE Social Media Workshop: It was worth it.

May 20th, 2010 by Clayton Walter

As the clock ticked towards 6 o’clock on Wednesday May 5th the crowd grew quiet. With a sense of urgency — pen, pad and recorders in hand —  we waited eagerly for Mr. Ric Dragon and company to educate us of ways to better use our social media. Not a moment after 6 Rick began. “Take up Google Reader” he said, “and follow 10 blogs.” The pens met paper and frantically we wrote. “Use Twitter and follow 10 (people), sign onto Facebook and follow 25. Go to LinkedIn and follow another 10…” It was a recipe for smart social media Ric shared with us. And without pause — like any good listener — we began to ask questions. (more…)

Using Social Media in and for Ulster County

May 14th, 2010 by Claudia D'Arcy

Local Solutions for Ulster Country Tourism

In my last blog post, How Ulster County Can Use Social Media to Promote Tourism, I expressed my feelings after attending the Ulster Tourism Conference.   Based on almost half of the topics that were promoted for the event (Viral marketing via YouTube and other social media, Effective public relations in a digital age, Influencing travelers’ decision through online media) , and the presentation, I did feel that it was a missed opportunity to bring the industry players together and teach them how to work together with social media to benefit Ulster County Tourism and our economy overall.

So, until the Tourism Advisory Committee sends me my engraved invitation to join with promises to listen with baited breath to every word I utter, I’m going to present some of the social media tactics that we encourage our clients to use her at DragonSearch. Of course, I have personalized it for Ulster Country Tourism, but really any small business of struggling industry can apply to their own marketing. (more…)

How Ulster County Can Use Social Media to Promote Tourism

May 11th, 2010 by Claudia D'Arcy

I attended the Ulster County Development Corporation & Ulster County Tourism‘s Ulster Tourism Conference held at the Kingston Holiday Inn on May 4th.  As part of the local community and also because we serve clients who need to promote their own local tourism destinations, I signed up months ago to hear more ideas about what people are doing in our area.

The conference was well attended, clearly showing that many local people cared enough about this subject to spend the time and money to learn about how to drive tourism in our area. It makes sense, after all, many of them are small business owners who count on out of town business to make their living and keep their employees paid.

Ulster Country Tourism: Working Together

The conference started with a common theme I have heard lately: working together as a community.  The first speakers spoke of the Ulster Tourism Industry not fighting over the same slice of pie anymore, but collectively joining forces to better not only individual establishments, but our whole community; our economy, our employment base, our tax roles.  Increased tourism benefits all who live here.  So, as a firm believer in community and reaching out, sharing information, etc. I thought it was off to a great start.
