Like many people my age, I have a hard time keeping up with the “Who’s who” of today’s world. Friends often mention people who I have heard of, but I do not know who they actually are. When this happens, I often resort to a Google Images Search. Over the years I have found out who people are by seeing what they look like. Their image will then remind me of what movies I have seen them in or what context I have heard their name in before and I can immediately relate to who the person is. Sometimes, I can even hold a conversation about the people I do searches on so I feel hip and young again!

One of the things I’ve determined while I’m in this reading/writing sabbatical is that I would like to identify 10-12 blogs to follow closely – like on a daily basis. A few years back I had experimented with blog readers and found them wanting. But this morning, I logged into Google Reader, created an account – and within minutes had added those blogs. Just what the doctor ordered.
There are also a handful of cool features that make sense if I use my Google profile in a real social networking way. I’m not so sure that Google’s bid to be a player in the social media space has really panned out yet. It just hasn’t gathered momentum yet. But if Google does decide to put more emphasis on it (and after all, they did just come out with Buzz) – it could be a real war. A social media blood bath. OR – all of those social media sites will hold hands, sing Kumbaya, and figure out a way to integrate all social media.

Google’s Personalized Search Results & Other Links Between On- and Offline
SEOMoz posted recently about how “Personalization of Google Results Creates a Huge Advertising Opportunity.” As usual, Rand Fishkin is on to something.

Essentially, the concept involves using offline (or traditional advertising mediums) to tell people to take a specific action online. In this case, Fishkin suggests that directing viewers/listeners to Google a brand name that will “bias” future related search results towards that brand. And it’s all possible thanks to Google’s personalized search results – the now default search mode where expressions of brand preference or brand affinity “influence” future searches in favor of the brand’s domain. Google Mistakes Lead to Irrelevant Results on Google Search
Did you hear the one about the diarrhea eating parakeet? No? Go to Google and type in the words “Why won’t.” Wait. Hold on a sec, let me do it for you and show how Google search results get hijacked.

Before you get all hot-and-bothered, I know Google query suggestions aren’t technically search results, but they are designed to guide your search efforts and make the process potentially easier. Typing in “why won’t” and having the first suggestion refer to a universally absurd question makes this a pretty interesting Google mistake. Come to think of it, check out the second suggestion above – I can’t say I’ve often (or ever) wondered the same. (more…)

Google Humor Is Funny…Not Ha-ha Funny, but funny
We’ve all got ideas on how civilization will ultimately decline. I happen to know it’s going to be robots – robots and earthquakes (great band name, by the way). Funny Google easter eggs are the last shred of proof that I need. In fact, Google humor in general is another sign that the robots are winning.
Google Easter Eggs: What Are They? Should I Care? Were You Serious About the Robots?
Easter eggs are hidden features and neat little jokes snuck into everything from Google’s search results to Google Earth. (more…)

So, I was fortunate enough to watch one of Microsoft’s new commercials for Bing.com, its new live search engine that provides decision based results, and I must say that I was extremely impressed. Being the traveler that I am, I have a sincere appreciation for Bing’s daily feature of random locations around the world accompanied by the 3 or 4 fun facts about these cities or countries. Dare I say I’m sold? Not quite yet; however, Bing offers some interesting tools that are lacking on Google’s end such as Quick Previews, customer service phone numbers in the organic listings and an Explorer Pane for search refinement. Take a look at the picture below which displays an example of what Bing’s Quick Preview looks like.

The box outlined in red is the Quick Preview for the first search result. One can see this preview by simply scrolling the mouse over the yellow quick glance button. (more…)
