Link Baiting

May 12th, 2010 by John Lavin

link baiting hookThe number of inbound links to your website is a metric used by search engines for ranking the website.  The more links a website has to it, the higher rank it will obtain.  So, naturally, SEO incorporates link building, as it is essential to getting high rankings.  Enter link baiting, Wikipedia defines link baiting as, “Any content or feature within a website that somehow baits viewers to place links to it from other websites.”  In other words, link baiting is a method to get links to your page so it ranks higher.  There are many different hooks of link baiting and I will discuss a few of them further below. The Philosopher’s Stone of Link Building: Universal Formulas

A Link Builder's Dream....

Have I suddenly discovered the best SEO strategies ever through revelation?  No, I have not.  Moreover, I probably wouldn’t tell you if I did (can you say trade secret?).  I do have a thing or two to say, however, about this quest we marketers are on to formulate the best, most flexible SEO strategies and link building campaigns; that is, generalizing our tactics so that they are useful in every situation.  Having a handy-dandy formula may make us confident and give us a sense of security when addressing a new client, but it is ultimately not for the best.  Here is why.  (more…)

Internet Marketing Just Got More Awesome…

January 28th, 2010 by admin

Or disturbing, depending on your view of online advertising and the technological metropolis that gave rise to it.  According to a recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, children ages 8 to 18 spend most of their day (7.5+ hours) utilizing a smart phone, a computer, and, of course, a television.  This means a number of things for those who have a message or product to deliver/present to the public, and indicates that the field of Internet Marketing has a very healthy future ahead—assuming nothing happens that either takes us back to the stone age, puts our fate in the hands (or jaws) of zombies, or both (which would really suck; who wants to fight zombies without guns or chainsaws?). Some Funny Jokes, SEO Style

January 14th, 2010 by admin

Sadly, we SEOs do not have enough in terms of insider jokes that we can be proud of, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a special batch of us who aren’t trying!  Let’s face it:  When you’re in any industry long enough, you become engrossed in all kinds of new concepts and jargon that you can create humorous relationships among.  Of course, only certain people will understand these abstruse, short, but clean jokes, yet that fact is where half the humor lies; for you are then certain of your being an elite SEO nerd. Postmodern SEO: The Real Deal (That Tongue Better Be In Your Cheek Again)

December 17th, 2009 by admin
"postmodern wallpaper"

This will blow your mind....

What intrigues me is that there is an interesting and very intelligent comparison of postmodernism and SEO on another blog (and it is a mere two weeks older!).  I thought this post would be something of a first of its kind.  Nonetheless, I intend on going into the true nature-assuming there is one-of Postmodern SEO, and not just a simple exposition.  What the postmodern approach means for the entire SEO enterprise will be made quite clear in the following.

And do not worry; there is a moral at the end of this extremely strange story which shows both SEO and relativism/postmodern philosophy at their worst. (more…)

SEO Claims You Shouldn't Believe

She may be beautiful, but she can't help you with your SEO.

She may be beautiful, but she can't help you with your SEO.

The SEO guarantees that follow this section must be read with your tongue firmly planted in your cheek.  Again, the SEO guarantees that follow this section must be read with your tongue firmly planted in your cheek (this means they are unforgivably sarcastic).  Now that that’s out of the way, I now can say that the real point of this post is to poke fun at the grandiose claims some SEO firms make for their clients, and to hopefully reinforce the clients’ right to investigate the quality of the organization they are considering.  Here is a pair of simple rules for businesses who are ready and willing to make the wise move of incorporating SEO into their strategy for success:  investigate everything about your potential business partner and draw your conclusions. SEO and Color Meanings, Along With Some Nice Hats

The Meanings of SEO Hat Colors

This is probably already sounding like the most cliché blog post that will ever be written for the SEO world; however, it will not be (fooled you!), and I promise that there is some degree of knowledge to be obtained by gleaning the following.  You will also be pleasantly surprised at how rich SEO hat culture is, as well as at how different and diverse the color meanings are. Why SMM is Not SEO

November 13th, 2009 by Claudia D'Arcy

As social media keeps getting more and more attention, many of our SEO management clients come to us with questions. It’s getting rather complicated because they hear about Twitter and LinkedIn and I can tell that they feel pressured to be involved, yet they don’t quite know how.  Often they want to make sure that they are represented in the latest hot new trend, but what is happens is a client contracted for SEO begins to talk about wanting SMM services.

SMM and SEO: Alike, but Differentsocial-media

Somewhere we had to draw a line that separates the two activities which really isn’t that hard because they are not the same.

Search Engine Optimizations is a huge very complicated area with many technical coding issues and checklists that all add up to helping the search engines find and rank your webpage correctly. When we manage an SEO account for a client, we are essentially building back links to their website for the purpose of increasing that pages rankings for the specified anchortext.

While essentially the goal of back linking is to get a link from a relevant site, over 18 months ago ( before social media had a real name), we also incorporated general branding and promotions. Sometimes, it’s not just a link that one ends up getting, or sometimes time is invested but there is no link, but still branding and promotions.

Social Media Marketing, however, is much simpler in many ways.  While links are great and passed links are becoming more and more important; really the idea is to just be social and active.. and links are not the only goal.

The Lines between SMM and SEO Blend

Some more social orientated profiles are included in standard SEO back linking and this is where it gets fuzzy.

Our SEO management isn’t just about creating back links to improve search engine rankings. Since we do take a more rounded approach and cover any aspects of promotion and branding which allows us to make important profiles for solid universal search results. The idea being, of course, that no matter where a potential customer was online, if they searched for one of our client on any website, by name or main keyword, they would find their way to our client’s website soon enough. Well ranking profiles on Twitter and Facebook are defiantly services that bridge the gap between SMM and SEO because of this very reason.

The 2012 Prophecy: Optimization Of The Worst Kind

November 5th, 2009 by admin

December 2012-The Holiday Season We Won’t Forget

The 2012 prediction is going to give rise to one hell of a Christmas time during that year, but not for the reason so many people with death wishes believe-or hope for.  Indeed, if there is any Christmas that is going to be disappointing for these individuals, it will be that of 2012.

But this is not a post that will be directly dealing with the fictitious nature of the 2012 prophecy (you can find plenty of factual refreshments at NASA’s website, particularly the scientist David Morrison who ‘specializes’ in dealing with this, well, nonsense).  It will deal with another kind of ‘dark side’ of SEO (and search engine use in general) that bears a striking resemblance to the adage “Falsehood flies, and the truth comes limping after” by Jonathan Swift. The Ethics Of SEO Services

The Wise Donkey

The Wise Donkey

SEO and ethics might seem like too lofty a subject matter, and/or sound like I’m trying to be more profound than I actually am.  The latter is definitely true, although I do not think there is anything wrong with considering what SEO might mean for a business’s reputation, for that is sort of the whole point to begin with, essentially.

For instance, what if the SERP of your brand is littered with, well, unfriendly opinions about you; and you, of course, want to do whatever you can to diminish those opinions; that is, hide them in some way or get them removed completely.  I would like to think that these options respectively correspond to a low path and a high path in dealing with negative feedback.  Fortunately, it is possible to have the two converge into a practical, ethical middle.
