Website Search Engine Ranking: What Else is There?

October 27th, 2011 by

In Website Search Engine Ranking Got You Down? Stop the Insanity!, I highlighted all of the reasons why you should not focus on keyword search engine ranking.  In this post, I outline what you should be looking at to ensure success.

If I Can’t Obsess Over My SEO Keyword Ranking Checker, What Should I Be Obsessing Over?

Of course, the answer depends on your marketing campaign goals, objectives and the action plan you have in place to fulfill those goals.  However, if you need something to fill the void, here are some things that are going to give you a much better idea of what your website search engine ranking means and could be for you: (more…)

Website Search Engine Rankings Got You Down? Stop the Insanity!

Stop the Insanity! Why Are You Driving Yourself Mad Checking Keyword Rankings All Day, Every Day?

I have found myself once again fighting the good fight about why website search engine rankings are not the thing to focus on.

These conversations usually go something like this:

  • Business Owner (who wants to see results, now – believe me, so do we):  I want my website to rank number one for “this keyword” and “that keyword” oh and maybe “this keyword, too.”   How quickly can you make that happen?
  • Marketing Director (who has to answer to the higher ups – yes, we understand that):  I Googled “insert brand name keyword” last week and I was number one and now I did it today and I am not on the first page anymore.  What did you do?
  • Manager (who wonders how they ended up doing the marketing for the company and are swimming in information – we feel your pain):  I used this keyword ranking checker tool my boss just read about and it says I am number one for “insert keyword” but I am not seeing us at all on the first page when I search.  What’s up with that?

From Nobodies to Somebodies: Who Are the New Influencers

October 21st, 2011 by

During this past week I took a small break from book writing to participate in Social Week in New York City. Two of my favorite conferences were scheduled, Pivot Conference 2011 , and Conversion Conference East 2011.

Pivot Conference is produced and hosted by Brian Solis, the author of Engage, and more recently, The End of Business As Usual: Rewire the Way You Work to succeed in the Consumer Revolution.  I only just got my copy of the latter, but I can tell that if you could only bring five books to a desert island, Engage should be one of them. Product Branding & Brand Recognition in the Digital Age

Are We Living in the End of Advertising?

Julian Sanchez thinks so:

Imagine that, for nearly any product consumers encountered, some kind of aggregate rating—based on whatever criteria the individual has determined are most important—would simply appear, with minimal effort. Simply looking at an aisle of products—or even passing shops on the street—I might effortlessly learn which were deemed most satisfactory by people with tastes similar to mine… With such information more directly available, marketing would become far less relevant to the buyer—and a far less worthwhile investment for the producer.  (more…)

#140conf NYC: Passion, Engagement, and a Whole Lot of Hugs

June 17th, 2011 by

“Hugs over Handshakes” is Jeff Pulver’s mantra, and this was quite apparent throughout the whole of the #140conf NYC. From giving a voice to the homeless to ending corporal punishment, #140conf managed to successfully pack a two-day conference with more do-gooders than you could see on any given season of Oprah. But don’t get it twisted: #140conf’s primary focus was indeed the state of now (with a large helping of social good on the side).

New York City Wikipedia“Newbie” Classes: Plunging Into Editing Wikipedia Articles

This second session, I’ll break up into two Wikipedia Editing blog posts so you can follow along step by step. This way, I can answer the ‘Why’ along with the ‘What.’

Lesson 3: Getting Our Article Editing Bearings

I’m going to hit you with a lot of screenshots right now but it’ll cut about an hour off your initial head-scratching when attempting to find a starting place to edit Wikipedia articles. I find pictures are effective when learning to navigate a web site, so for all my examples, we’ll refer to this slightly specialized page which you may recognize from last post [link to NDG3: Seeking Wikipedia Editing Help in NYC] : Wikipedia Article Rat Terrier. Here’s what you see. (you may need to click the images for a full sized view.)
