Social Strategies That Work, Simple?
October 26th, 2011 by Ric DragonMikotaj Jan Piskorski & Harvard Business Review
If social media marketers needed any proof that their work is important, perhaps the fact that the Harvard Business Review has one or more articles on the subject in every issue these days. And of course, being HBR, those articles are being written by some of the brighter thinkers around.
One such article in the November 2011 issue is authored by an associate professor in the strategy unit at Harvard Business School, Mikotaj Jan Piskorski. The article titled Social Strategies That Work can be read online at:

What Businesses Need for Social Strategies to be Successful
Piskorski restates the essential message that just about every SoMe marketer has made, that businesses can’t simply import their non-social strategies into social and expect them to work. People aren’t interested in being the subjects of promotion. Instead, the author provides a simple solution to what businesses need for their social strategies to be successful:
The strategy must:
- Reduce Costs or increase customers’ willingness to pay
- By helping people establish or strengthen relationships
- If they do free work on a company’s behalf (more…)

Online Personal Branding & America’s Next Top Model
October 3rd, 2011 by Ryan L WatermanI was in the shower this morning (is that too much information, already? If it is, pretend I was just in the kitchen) and I began thinking about America’s Next Top Model. For those who know me, that’s not out of the ordinary… at all. For those who aren’t familiar with ANTM (if you aren’t, we should talk), it is a reality TV competition for models created by Tyra Banks. The current cycle of ANTM is called America’s Next Top Model All Stars because Tyra has brought back girls from past cycles to compete for the ultimate Top Model prize package and also for redemption. You see, none of these “All Stars” won their previous cycle. Most did not even come close.
There’s the girl who’s remembered for not wanting to take her clothes off, the model whose food was stolen, and there are one or two girls who I’m convinced were never even on ANTM. Despite not winning, all have gone on to successful careers. How did they do it? Brand recognition. The girls who have used their experiences (negative or otherwise) to their advantage, have a career. At the very least, it got them back on the show. So what does all of this mean in social media? Let’s talk about online personal branding. (more…)
Search Marketing Expo: SMX East 2011 Day One
September 19th, 2011 by Kevin Kerr
One of the great perks of working here in the Hudson Valley is the relative ease of getting to New York City. Not only do I get to enjoy the benefits of fresh air and scenic beauty of this rural Williamsburg, but when I do get that itch for the excitement and bustle of the city, the greatest metropolis on the planet is only ninety minutes away. So while other Search Marketing pros gathered for SMX East 2011 from remote climes and far off lands, enduring the rigors of transcontinental travel and airport security, I simply took Metro-North to Grand Central, hopped the 7 train, and arrived fresh and ready for some serious SEO knowledge sharing.

#140confHV Debuts Three Dragons as Social Media Speakers
August 31st, 2011 by Jillian Jackson
It was my first time. #140confHV (Hudson Valley’s first 140 Characters conference) featured refreshments, resources and the relaxed atmosphere of Hudson Valley businesses. It was an exciting day full of great speakers, great ideas and networking. The day started at Seven21Media Center and finished at Keegan Ales with a relaxed networking after party. But the hours between start and finish were a beautiful blur. Here are some of my thoughts from the day I became a Social Media Speaker.
